FlexI just came to know via the Flex Team blog that Adobe has decided to make Flex Builder free for qualified students and faculty.

The details are still in the works but the target date for this is early November. This is great news as it will help Flex adoption a lot especially in developing countries like India. Thank you Adobe.

So if you are a student or a faculty, keep an eye on the Flex Developer Center. read more

I was looking at directory.onflex.org which is an open listing of Flex Consulting Firms worldwide and I found 6 firms in India:

Some of the above companies I knew of via their employees’ blogs or via Flex-India.org and some I did not know about …. but its great to know that many such consulting firms are popping up around the country and I’m sure that the ones listed above are not the only ones so if your company is into Flex consulting you should get it listed on directory.onflex.org

Apart from the above, I know Abdul has been trying to put together a list of Flex Consultants in India … I wonder if he got a good response.

Update: I am now a Flex Consultant too. Check out this post for more details.

I have been exploring Flex for a little over a year now and all through this time I never had a chance to read an actual book on Flex or ActionScript 3 …. Why ? …. well because until recently there was no Flex book available in India. Every time I went to book stores around Bangalore looking for some Flex book, I would return disappointed as the people at the book stores would’ve never heard of the term Flex and when I mentioned ActionScript they would point me to the old Flash books.

ActionScript 3 CookBookA couple of weeks back on Raghu’s Flex Wednesday someone in the chat window pointed out that ActionScript 3.0 Cookbook was now available in Delhi and coincidently i had plans to visit Delhi the weekend after that so I decided to get myself a copy. The bookstore i went to was the New Book Depot in Connaught Place … i went in, asked for books on Adobe Flex and to my surprise this guy was aware of the subject, but he regretfully told me that although many people had been asking for books on that topic he does not have any. Then I asked him for books on ActionScript 3 and …. he had the ActionScript 3 CookBook by Joey Lott, Darron Schall and Keith Peters available, I got very excited at the prospect of finally finally getting to read an actual book on Flex/AS3 and I got myself a copy. Like most O’Reilly books this book is also being sold as a low price edition in India which is good ’cause I did not have to shell out half a month’s rent to get it.

The goodness and usefulness of this book is already well established so I’m just gonna say its awesome and I simply love it.

What I would like to do here is to give a shout out to the authors Joey, Darron, Kieth and the publishers for making this available in India … Thank you Guys :) ….. and at the same time I would request authors and publishers of other Flex books to please make their books available in India as well. I also hope that Adobe can somehow help with this. read more
