I’m a Rich Internet consultant

February 3, 2008

Thursday, the 31st of January was my last day at SAP, after a lot of thinking I finally decided to step out of the corporate work environment that I’ve been in since I started my career and give consulting a chance. But wait, before you start typing an email to send me your next RIA project, I have already committed the next several months to an RIA for a stealth mode web startup based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The project is extremely exiting and was one of the many triggers that made me take this big step. Currently we are a small team of three where I’m the only developer, the other two guys are the ones who had the idea and understand the business in the idea very well. So from a development standpoint I’ll be doing it all on my own, although we may seek more help if needed down the line. I’ve done many such all on my own projects at SAP so I’m pretty confident that i can pull this off. The scary part is the working from home bit …. while I used to occasionally work from home while at SAP, doing it full time scares me a lot .. hopefully I can deal with it .. If you have some tips please do share.

I would like to thank all my peers a SAP for all the support, encouragement, guidance and learning that they provided me over the past 14 months and wish all of them a very bright future. I had an excellent time working at SAP … I worked on several Flex/AIR/SAP applications that showcased how SAP could be used as a platform for rich experiences and all my projects very well received all across the company, many of them even helped SAP win big sales deals. The people I got to work with are some the best is their respective fields and I learned a lot form all of them and best of all I made some very good friends.

These past 14 months couldn’t have been better and now its time for me to take on some exciting new challenges, so wish me luck.

    hi mate,

I’ve worked from home, programming since I was 14 (now just about to hit the big 4 0). I can’t imagine any other way.

Though many people say the opposite, I find that it’s best to remember you are at work, not at home. try to dress the same as you would in the office (don’t in your PJs). get yourself a set up in a room slightly cut off from the rest of the house, not too close to the kitchen). get yourself a watercooler, and mini fridge in your room if possible. Get out of your workroom for an hour mid-day if possible). Make sure friends, family don’t think just because you’re at home now they can come visit any time of day. Get a second phone line & number.

I love working from home. I’ve tried once of twice to go the other way, but i’m nowhere near as productive.

Oh, and a good view from the window in your office is always nice too. make it a room you really look forward to going into in the morning.

Lastly make sure you remember you are working form home – not living at work!

good luck, and let me know how it goes.

  21. The great thing about working from home, for me has been that I can do this anywhere. Not tied to the big city anymore, I moved to a charming little town in the country which fits better with my love of the outdoors. As a remote worker you can be truly nomadic! And by the sounds of it, you’re already livin’ the life. As Glenn mentioned, the hardest part is discipline, which sounds worse than it is: just be careful to form work habits that support you, because no one’s telling you to show up at 9am anymore.

Best of fortune in your endeavours.

  22. Best of Luck :)

    Cheers

  23. Thanks Vivek :)

    Cheers !!

  24. Joe,
Thanks a lot for your good wishes and the very valuable advice. Not being tied to a city is definitely very attractive

  25. best of luck, as every body told “discipline” is very important, and also make sure U meet ur friends daily, since we are used to work in a environment where , we are around people always and going for canteen or for a walk when we get stressed in office , so have a social circle to hand around in the evenings

  26. Hey, Best of Luck dude. Wishing you great career ahead.

    Hey Mrinal,

You are lucky man…!!! I am on the verge of loosing my friends back in my native due to lack of communication. They have kind of prohibited me to enter into their community anymore :( .

Parents seems frustratingly calling me every night just to keep the feeling going that they have 1 piece of living daughter somewhere.

And food!!! Now I curse myself for often getting angry with my mother for cooking the same type of curry for two consecutive days. Now I try to fill my stomach and be happy by imagining the beautiful site of the curry my mother used to prepare for me. And that awesome smell, and that taste!!!! Ohhhh…now I better zip my lips.

And waking up at 6′O Clock one fine morning to find out that my headache is going out of control, feeling feverish and then my heart terribly wants my body to lay down once again and then suddenly remembering that all my PLs and sick leaves are over…then RUN……or I will miss the cab!!

I envy you Mrinal. But still wish you an exciting life ahead.

  28. Hey Mrinal,

Good luck and keep in touch :) l

  30. Mrinal,

    Good luck.

I started the same way as y ou are doing right now. If you are going to be a company than there would be ups and downs but if you would have good network and peaceful mind everything would be okay. And if you would like to go as one man army thats the best as no dependency on others.

I started as alone, and in 3 years grown as 3, 8, 20, 30 and currently 25 team size.

    Good luck once again.

  31. Thanks a lot Ashwin, its very inspiring to know about your success and I wish you all the best in the future as well.
